Joint child custody is the most common arrangement after a divorce in Virginia. Successful co-parenting depends on maintaining good communication and putting the child’s needs first. The details of co-parenting can sometimes be burdensome and even contentious. Fortunately, technology can provide a helping hand.
There are a number of online applications specifically designed to assist with the numerous aspects of co-parenting. These apps offer basic features like a shared calendar, scheduling tools, expense trackers and messaging services. However, they are not identical. Also, bear in mind that some apps are free, while others require a paid subscription. Here is a sampling of popular co-parenting apps, with summaries of their basic features:
- AppClose — This app offers messaging and a journal for co-parenting conversations. You can manage a parenting calendar and make requests for calendar changes. It allows you to keep a record of conversations, messages and other communications among people in a defined circle. You can manage and export financial records.
- CoParenter — Besides planning and communication tools, this app allows for check-ins to show your child’s location when they are with the other parent. It supports various custody schedules and visitation routines as well as expenses and bill management. It also offers coaching support and lets you work out issues with help from an online mediation team.
- Custody X Change — This app lets you track and manage custody schedules on your computer or your phone. Its calendar has a drag-and-drop interface and automatic reminders to notify parents of upcoming events and handoffs. An optional feature lets you monitor a child's location during exchanges.
- OurFamilyWizard —Besides scheduling, expense tracking, messaging and to-do lists, this app can generate court-friendly reports documenting interactions and expenses. It also offers some unique features, such as Info Bank, which allows you to share medical records, and a “Tone Meter,” which flags disrespectful messaging comments before you send them.
- Talking Parents — This app allows for secure time-stamped messages to ensure transparency in communications. You can request money, keep a shared journal and document important interactions. Its communication tool focuses on positive phrasing to avoid emotional upsets. A secured vault lets you store important documents like court orders and medical records.
- WeParent — This app lets you create and follow a customized parenting plan. Features include communication tools journal and photo sharing, expense tracking with receipt and scheduling of virtual doctor appointments. You can use the app with your entire family or friend group.
The suitability of an app to your specific situation depends on a number of criteria, such as the app’s functionality, ease of use and privacy protections. In addition, some apps are court-approved, which can be beneficial if you need to provide documentation of compliance with court-ordered arrangements.
